How to Clean Your Air Conditioner Filters

Author: Lance Wiggers

Experts recommend that you need to have a refrigerated air conditioning service carried out at the beginning of each cooling season. This annual checkup will ensure that your system is ready for the months ahead and reduce the chances of a failure. Well maintained equipment lasts longer and this will save money in the long term. However, there are some tasks that you can do yourself without professional training. A clean air conditioning system will be more effective and energy efficient.

Check the Manual First

Before you engage in any type of cleaning, check out the instructions in your owner’s manual on how to access and clean the parts. If you cannot find the manual, check the manufacturer’s website and you’re likely to find a downloadable copy there. Then before you begin, always ensure that there is no power being supplied to the system.

The Importance of Clean Filters

The filters installed inside your air conditioning system are designed to filter out dust and harmful microbes. However, over time they will become blocked with debris, and they will need to be cleaned. A blocked filter will impede the airflow, and this will cause the system to work much harder than it needs to in order to compensate. This will increase the wear and tear on your system and deliver a poorer level of performance. In extreme cases, a dirty air filter may even collect moisture deposits and mould could develop. This would distribute mould spores throughout your home, and this may lead to health issues.

Cleaning the Indoor Air Filters

Follow the instructions in the manual. This is usually a simple process, to pop the lid open and slide out the air filters. Most basic air filters these days are washable, and they can be easily cleaned under a tap and air dried. Most manufacturers recommend that an air filter is cleaned at least once each month, but this can vary depending on how much you use the system. If you have pets, their hair can also block up the air filter, and you may need to clean the filter more often.

If you have an air purification system, there will also be an activated carbon or HEPA filter present. These filters can also be removed easily and cleaned, but they are less robust than a basic air filter unit. Typically, these types of purification filters will need to be replaced every year to maintain performance and efficiency.

The filters can be taken outside for a shake and then brushed with a soft brush to get most of the debris off the surfaces. If your vacuum cleaner has a dusting brush, use that to give the air filters a thorough cleaning. If the filters are still dirty, they can be washed in warm water with a mild detergent and then rinsed with clean water. Always ensure that the filters are thoroughly dry before they are replaced in the unit.
