FAQ On Ducted Air Conditioning

What is ducted air conditioning?

Ducted air conditioning systems are designed to cool or heat your entire home through ducts in your roof space. A central unit cools (or warms) the air and then distributes it through the ducts into each room of the home.

Ducted air conditioning systems can be evaporative or refrigerated. Some are also reverse cycle air conditioning, meaning they can distribute both cool and warm air.

How does evaporative ducted air con work?

Evaporative ducted air conditioners use the natural phenomenon of evaporation to provide cool, refreshing air to your entire home.

a)  Hot air from outside the home is drawn into the central unit.
b)  The hot air passes through filters that are moistened by water.
c)  The water evaporates, turning into gas and becoming part of the air.
d)  The moist, cool air is blown through the ducts and out into the different rooms in the home.
e) The moist, cool air absorbs heat from inside the rooms and must be pushed out through an open door, window or vent.

In hot weather, a refrigerated ducted AC takes warm air from inside your home and replaces it with cooled air.

a)  Warm air from inside your home is drawn into the cooling unit.
b)  Inside the cooling unit, the warm air passes over a coil that contains chemicals called refrigerant.
c)  The heat in the air is transferred into the refrigerant, leaving the air nice and cool.
d)  This cool air is then blown through ducts in the ceiling into the different rooms of the home.

Many modern refrigerated air conditioners are reverse cycle. This means the process inside the cooling unit can be reversed and warm air distributed throughout the home.

Is Ducted Air Conditioning Efficient?

Ducted air conditioning tends to be an efficient method of cooling and/or heating the entire home.

Evaporative ducted systems are particularly energy efficient because they use very little power to run. Cool air is generated by the natural process of evaporation. Electricity is only used for the fan and the water pump.

Many refrigerated ducted systems come with zoning capabilities. This means you can turn the air conditioner off for rooms that are not being used. Zoning greatly increases the energy efficiency of ducted air conditioners because you are only heating or cooling areas of the house that require it.

How much does ducted air conditioning cost to run?

Ducted air conditioning may cost between $1 – $5 an hour to run.

Of course, the exact cost will depend on a range of factors such as how often you use it, what temperature it’s set to, how efficient the system is and how many rooms you’re cooling/heating.

Check out our tips below for making ducted AC more efficient and saving money on your power bill.

How can I make my ducted AC more efficient?

There are many ways you can save on your cooling and heating bills when you have ducted air conditioning. Here are a few great tips:

a) Adjust your thermostat a few degrees higher. During summer, aim for 24 degrees or higher. During winter, 20 degrees or lower.
b) Close doors and windows for refrigerated systems. This will stop hot air from creeping into your home which means your air conditioner won’t have to work as hard.
c) Turn AC off for rooms that aren’t being used. Close the doors to rooms that aren’t occupied as well to help your air con run more efficiently.
d) Use timers to turn the air con on or off at optimal times. With timers, you’ll never forget to turn off the air con again.
e) Get your air conditioning serviced regularly. If a system isn’t running properly, it’ll consume more energy. Regular maintenance can help it stay in top shape.
f) Consider going solar. Solar power can help you harness free, clean energy from the sun so that you can save on your energy costs.

How to clean a ducted air conditioning filter?

Cleaning your ducted air con filter is important to ensure the system runs efficiently and the air quality remains healthy.

3)  Wash the filter in warm water and dry it out completely.
4) Return the filter back into the grill and fix it back in place.

How long does ducted air conditioning last?

Although it depends on a number of factors, after air conditioning installation, ducted systems usually last up to 20 years. Regular cleaning and maintenance can often extend the life of a system and prevent major breakdowns from occurring.
